I recently did the same in Coreutils. It was much more difficult than I originally thought. Mostly because posix_spawn has no portable way to find out why the child failed, e.g. because the executable does not exist.

I'm guessing that should be less of a problem for groff, hopefully.

Per suggestion from Bruno Haible, migrate to use posix_spawn()...if we decide to keep this preprocessor at all.  (I think we can get rid of it if we resolve bug #60052.)
