I don't mind modifying my workflow - but it may be a hardship for those that have it automated and distributed.

According to the GNU Coding Standards: "Each GNU distribution should come with a shell script named configure. [...]"

Tarballs should normally be distributed with a configure script so that users do not have to install the autotools. This is normally done with "make dist" (or better, "make distcheck").

To generate configure script just run autogen.sh like described in INSTALL file:

First, run ./autogen.sh. This will create configure file that you can use.

Instructions still say to run "sh ./configure" - however "configure" is not in the release, so we get an error - "Can't open ./configure"
