Fixed in git, commit 10eec2fe, by cancelling any spotlighting when any keycodes are waiting in the keystroke buffer.

Bug exists since version 5.8.  The offending commit is 3f340836: "automatically drop the spotlighting after a few moments".

To reproduce, run:

src/nano --ignore -x README

Then record a macro like this:
<Shift+Alt+:> ^W the <Enter> xx <End> <Shift+Alt+:>

Now execute the macro once with <Alt+;>.  See how for one second and a half "xxt" is spotlighted, after the typed "xx".  Then the spotlighting is dropped and the cursor appears at the end of the line.  If needed, execute the macro a few more times, slowly.
