Oliver, have you been able to confirm Deri's hypothesis that the problem you were experiencing here was with the PDF viewer?

Further discussion took place off-ticket on the bug-groff email list; see http://lists.gnu.org/r/bug-groff/2022-06/msg00002.html and other messages linked in the thread.  (Deri quoted one of them in comment #4.)

The problem is not that groff can't find the fonts since we can view the ESB.pdf with the braces fine. Since the fonts are not embedded in the pdf, because the fonts used are included in the pdf base fonts, the problem is with the actual pdf viewer.

In comment #1 I suggested producing the pdf with the fonts embedded, but I have not heard whether that was successful. Just in case I have attached a pdf with the relevent fonts embedded. It would be interesting to find out whether the viewer will show the braces correctly.

I, too, cannot reproduce this problem with groff 1.22.4 or Git HEAD.

Oliver, do you have the URW fonts installed?  On my Debian-based system, these are maintained in a package called 'gsfonts'.

On the file system, they are in files with names like this.

/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010013l.afm
/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010013l.pfb
/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010013l.pfm
/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010015l.afm
/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010015l.pfb
/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010015l.pfm

When I view the file ESB.pdf you provided it looks like the ESB.ps file. I notice that the pdf was created by ghostscript and the symbol font is not embedded, which relies on the pdf viewer being able to locate the appropriate font on your system when it renders the pdf to the screen.

There are a couple of things you could try:-

Using ghostscript:-

ps2pdf -dEmbedAllFonts=true -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress ESB.ps

Or try:-

groff -Tpdf -te -P-e ESB.tbl > ESB-g.pdf

Which will create a pdf with all the fonts embedded.

To whom it may concern:

The attached file 1979_02940002.png shows what I want to reproduce with ESB.tbl.

I tried to build a stack with mathematical symbols to achieve a large vertical curly bracket.

In ESB.ps, the curly brackets are displayed correctly, albeit somewhat meagre in comparison to the original (doesn't bother me as long as it works), in the ESB.pdf file I get boxes or nothing, depending on viewer.

Please ignore the improper vertical alignment of the brackets, this is not part of the problem.

My groff installation is an out-of-the-box version 1.22.3 shipped with Fedora (31 or 32, I forgot).

Thank you very much,
Oliver.
