You are right. Subscript of va should be applied on llla. Sorry that I forgot about it while reporting. Indeed Meera, Rachana and Chilanka have that glyph.

I couldn't test your fix yet because of some build issues.I am trying to solve it and then will get back to you.

I just posted a change in serif an sans normal and bold, which seems to deal with this issue.  Hope I didn't break too much else.

I'm not sure what was going on there.  At least, I thought at some point that somethimse a subscript form of va (U+0D35) should be applied, at least on the letter llla (U+0D34).  There was such a combination in the original Rachana font, but I don't know what other evidence I had for it.  It is possible that in trying to implement this, I got the issue tangled up with that of the post-base ya.  There may have been another reason for this, but my notes peter out.

Whatever the reason: what I did to fix it was to remove all the below-form tables for va, and putting in specific post-base lookups for va, separate from ya.

Have a look!

Hi Aiswarya,

Sorry for the long delay.  I have to confess that it isn't because there was no time, but rather, because of past bad experiences.  It was rude of me.  I mean to deal with this with the days remaining in the year.

At first look: this is not what I thought -- a leftover of an experiment.  It appears to be a misunderstanding, applied quite consistently.  I am looking through my notes to find a clue as to why I thought this set of consonants should get a subscripted va.  It could also be a simple omission -- although that seems unlikely, as I made rather extensive test pages of Malayalam.
Maybe I can sort that out today.

As to tests... this is unfortunately rather tricky.  Installation in Linux and Windows can both get fouled up in non-obvious ways, and complex applications such as LibreOffice Writer or Firefox can both to funny things, such as caching fonts or even buggy behaviour.  It's important to look at everything several ways.

It is pretty safe to make a Unicode-encoded HTML file and open it directly with a web browser, provided you remember to correctly set the 'lang' attribute of any text elements in the file: for Malayalam that is 'lang="ml"'.  I'll attach an example, based on text you sent.

Adding to the previous comment: It doesn't work in Firefox. But it is working in LibreOffice Writer.

For information, I tried the same after building from trunk using svn with latest fontforge and this ligature is working.

Hi Aiswarya,

Yes, now I remember.

There was an effort some years ago to do something with this range, but bugs in other software precluded it.  My impression was that there is no interest in fixing the other bugs, and evidently they are are still there.  And maybe the whole effort was ill advised.

I guess I had chosen to forget the situation.

I'm not available for the next week.  Hopefully I can take it up at that time.  Then your help will be greatly appreciated!

.sfd file is too big to attach. Attaching diff file here.

I did the recent build myself, thanks. Indeed, it has better ligature formation. But the ligature formed when 'va' comes after 'chandrakkala' doesn't form the right ligature. Instead 'va' goes under the consonant. These are the original files:
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.ml.html (translation correspond to 'sponsored by free software foundation' under GNU image)
Another text file is attached.

I have fixed this in the .sfd file, which is attached. I removed commands for mal_va.blwf using recent version of fontforge. Because that ligature is always a post base form; it never makes below base form.

Hello, Aiswarya,

Much works has been done on the Malayalam range since the 2012 release.  It is in the current version control system.

If you like, I can send you a recent build of the fonts!
It will be very helpful to have another pair of eyes look at it!

Besides that, please send me original files so that I can reproduce your results.

Malayalam ligature formation is not working with Free Sans. Tested in webpages (using Firefox 66), LibreOffice writer 6.2 and in Lokalize 19.04.

It was first noticed in the Malayalam webpages of GNU (https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/why-free.ml.html), in the string 'Sponsored by Free Software Foundation', the underlined part that is Free Software Foundation, is showing without proper ligature form (screenshot is attached).

More details in the attached pdf.
