And that is what the guide stripe should allow: lines should be allowed to cross the stripe and the text should still be readable and the stripe visible. I don't like it when the stripe gets broken when some pieces of text cross it.

I'm liking the new guide stripe in v4 but find it can be intrusive due to being so wide. An lighter stripe (or an option for one) would be really nice to have. I've implemented this using U+2502 (BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT VERTICAL) and it looks much better, IMHO. Of course non-Unicode compiles could use the pipe character |. |

Corresponding source code
Instead of a lighter stripe, how about if the stripe were togglable? Then one could keep the stripe off most of the time, and briefly toggle it on when one wants to check the width of some lines.
