Okay, in /etc/console-setup/cached_UTF-8_del.kmap.gz I've simply changed the first "KeyboardSignal" to "Up" and have reloaded the map, and now <Alt+Up> acts as <Up> (instead of doing nothing).

A fix for the reported problem itself is coming up.

To reproduce, switch to a VT (say, <Ctlr+Alt+F2>), and run 'nano NEWS' there.  Then type: ^W the <Enter>.  And then type <Alt+Up> and <Alt+Down> a few times.  They do not jump to the previous or next occurrence of "the".

On my current laptop, <Alt+Up> does absolutely nothing, it doesn't produce any keycode.  <Alt+Down> just does the same as <Down>.  But today I tried this on my old box, and <Alt+Up> does the same as <Up> there.  Comparing the outputs of 'dumpkeys' shows on my laptop: "alt     keycode 103 = KeyboardSignal".  What is KeyboardSignal?  And who bound it to <Alt+Up>?  And why?

It seems that this has something to do with init and inittab. [1] But my system doesn't even use init!  Oww... what silliness.
