Since OpenType introduced Font Variation, this can be achieved by creating variable version of FreeFont.

Hello, Ole,

It's an interesting proposal.  We can't consider it in the short term.  Let me outline some of the issues.

As to how big a task it is, you should consider that the current FreeSerif roman medium contains 13,280 glyphs.  The whole set of FreeFont faces contains over 66,000 different glyphs.

As to "moving to FreeFont" I'm not sure what you mean -- the whole point of having different fonts around is to have variety in typesetting.  We don't advocate a one-font system, or a one-font world -- we insist that there is room in the world for many different fonts.

The thrust of the FreeFont project has been to provide Unicode support in styles that matched the original set.  What you are suggesting is a different direction for the whole project.

The various weights you mention is interesting...  I wouldn't mind having them.  But the overhead in providing just bold for each new unicode range is daunting.

So maybe we could consider a very limited extension to the fonts, starting perhaps just with the Latin letters.  This alone is a bigger task than you imagine.  Making letters that look good together in text is very tricky business.

One idea would be to start a separate project with GNU FreeFont at its core, which independently adds faces of various weights to the core set.

Thanks for the input!

I am trying to convince people to move to FreeFonts.

One of the things I miss is more weights (Hairline, Thin, Light, Black, Semi*, Extra*, Ultra* etc.). I understand there is no ressources to do this task well, but reading http://designwithfontforge.com/en-US/Bold_and_Other_Weights.html it seems it would not be a big task making a beta version available with many different weights. And maybe that would be good enough.

So I hereby suggest: Create many more weights automatically, and release them as beta-quality.
