David, that's great!  Have a look in SVN.

Thanks for the report, Bernard!

This actually appears in two fonts: FreeSerif and FreeSerif Bold Italic. This is because these fonts do not specify unique font identifiers (name table ID 3) in locale 1033 (English (US)), so FontForge generates a unique ID like “FontForge 2.0 : FreeSerif : 4-4-2017”. The patch fixes the problem (for one of the two fonts anyway) because it adds an explicit unique ID, so FontForge does not need to generate one.

You can see the problem by opening the generated OTF in any program that lets you see the contents of the name table.

Hi Bernard,

Where exactly do you see this date?  I can't find it.

Hi Bernard,

I am surprised by all of this, and I don't see how your patch would fix that.  Could you explain?

It really only happens in the one font face FreeSerifBoldItalic?

What version of FontForge do you use to build the font?

Have you looked at recent SVN for FreeFont?  There are many changes since 2012.

Sorry for the delay in writing... for unknown reasons, Savannah stopped sending me emails!

I found that a date like 1-1-2016 is embedded
in FreeSerifBoldItalic.ttf
when rebuilding the freefont package (on openSUSE Factory)
and that this can be avoided by applying the attached patch.
