The kind of conditions that Russell mentions can easily be added when defining converters between formats. The converters between Postscript and Pdf are defined in init-images.scm and I added the necessary preconditions in revision 7929.

It turns out this happens when TeXmacs is configured without access to ghostscript. The work around is to rebuild TeXmacs with a ghostscript dependency.

To "fix" the bug, PDF export should be disabled when the TeXmacs is configured without ghostscript support. Maybe somehow the user could be directed to recompile TeXmacs with a ghostscript dependency.

I confirm that I have this same problem with TeXmacs 1.0.7.9 running under NixOS (specifically nixos version 7i79358jwlpq7x2r67bs6im5gxic5bqh-TeXmacs-1.0.7.9).

I'm using debian unstable's package version 1:1.0.7.4-2 here, and I can reproduce the problem.

Steps to reproduce :
- launch texmacs from terminal with -d ;
- open a document ;
- choose File->Export->Pdf...
- no warning printed in the terminal, but the resulting file is a perfect postscript file, which ps2pdf (present and working) can turn in a nice pdf.

I tried to debug and found the following in TeXmacs/progs/texmacs/texmacs/tm-files.scm :
(tm-define (export-buffer to)
;; Temporary fix for saving to postscript or pdf
(if (string? to) (set! to (url-relative (get-name-buffer) to)))
(if (url? to) (set! current-save-target to))
(if (in? (url-suffix to) '("ps" "pdf"))
(print-to-file to)
(texmacs-save-buffer to "generic")))

which looks like in some cases, trying to save as a pdf or a ps leads to the same action being performed.

I'm not sure if it's significant.

Debian Linux "testing", Linux kernel 2.6.32-5-686 with libc6 2.11.2-2.

TeXmacs 1.0.7.4 installed from a Debian package texmacs-1:1.0.7.4-2. Apparently it does not use QT.

I have a working installation of ghostscript.

There are no errors in the console.

I don't know what else to say about my system.

Could you provide some context to reproduce the bug: system, texmacs flavour (x11,qt, installed from where, etc...), are there errors in the console, do you have a working installation of ghostscript, etc... ?

thanks.

When I export to PDF the resulting .pdf file is not a PDF file but a PostScript file.

This bug was introduced recently (probably in version 1.0.7.4).
