Have you seen the uniq function from the make standard library?

uniq = $(if $1,$(firstword $1) $(call uniq,$(filter-out $(firstword $1),$1)))

The sort function both sorts and remove duplicates a list of words. These two behaviors should be decoupled into two separate functions - a sort() that only sorts leaving duplicates, and a unique() that only removes duplicates but does not sort.
