Umm... no.  Ugh! :-).

However, I do agree that this should probably work better.  $@, etc. should probably always be the exact target name, without any of the internal translations performed.  I'll have to think about that more first though.

For the time being you can work around this by using something like:

 ./foo: ; @echo $(patsubst %,%bar,$(notdir $@))

(obviously I'm assuming that your real pattern substitution is more complex; if not you can just use:

 ./foo: ; @echo $(notdir $@)bar

Since make removes leading './'s from target names, it sometimes breaks subst. Example:

./foo:
@echo $(@:./%=%bar)

This will print 'foo' instead of the expected 'foobar'.

So, do you think that if make finds the 'from' pattern doesn't match the 'text', it could check if 'from' begins with './', remove it, and try again? Please and thank you!
