Revised tarball is up at www.dialup4less.com/~juanslayton

The full license text remains embedded in the binary greader, where I think it useful, and in greader.info, where it may be superfluous.

Hi,

I reviewed it again and you still having some little problems such as:
you must include the (C) in the copyright notice, this is important so
please fix it.

The other little problem is that you included the complete and
verbatim copy of the GNU GPL in many files like README and
"LICENSE_BOOK_FILES", this isn't necessary you just have to include a
verbatim copy of the GPL in a file called COPYING just like in
doc/reader but this  file doesn't need the copyright and license
notice at the top. In the other two files you just need to put the
copyright and license notice and nothing more.

In order to learn more about the GNU GPL consider to read these URLs:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/License-Notices.html

If you are willing to make the changes mentioned above, please provide
us with an URL to an updated tarball of your project.  Upon review, we
will reconsider your project for inclusion in Savannah.

tracker's web interface following the link below. Do not reply
directly, the registration process is not driven by e-mail, and we
will not receive such replies.

Morning.

When I downloaded and reviewed the tarball, I found a number of files that were included by accident.  Some of these were probably missing license documentation, but I think I have got rid of them all this time.

I swapped out the title Gnu Eclectic Reader for G Eclectic Reader; I hope some day to get this to be part of the GNU project and recover the original title.

New tarball is up on the site:  www.dialup4less.com/~juanslayton

     Have a good one.

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

I reviewed your tarball and you have some some files with the
copyright notice missing and others have the license notice missing
too, consider to fix this. Remember that any file with more than ten
lines long should carry on a copyright and license notice, even the
binary files can have these two things in a README in the same dir.

Related to the book* files that must carry on a copyright and license
notice please consider to add a file called "LICENSE_BOOK_FILES" or
something like that with the copyright and license notice for these
files.

You have the COPYING file missing on your tarball, this must carry on
a verbatim copy of the GPL, you can get this copy from the GNU site
just here: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt.

As your project isn't part of the GNU project, please consider to
remove the GNU word from the Full Name of your project.

If you are willing to make the changes mentioned above, please provide
us with an URL to an updated tarball of your project.  Upon review, we
will reconsider your project for inclusion in Savannah.

To help us better keep track of your registration, please use the
tracker's web interface following the link below. Do not reply
directly, the registration process is not driven by e-mail, and we
will not receive such replies.

Reading management programs have become a big thing in public schools.  One commercial program in particular has come to dominate the field:  Accelerated Read, by Renaissance Learning is used in over 50,000 schools by 400,000 educators.  Anyone familiar with the program should know what it means to 'milk the system.'  It is way past time to provide a free version of these programs.

I started this project several years ago as a feasability demonstration.  The program, Gnu Eclectic Reader, is written in C, using the ncurses library.  It has been compiled with Slackware 10's version of gcc using -O2 optimization.  It can be downloaded as greader.tar.gz from www.dialup4less.com/~juanslayton.  Untar from / and the program binary goes into /usr/local/bin/.  The data files go into /usr/local/com/reader/. The source file and README should show up in /usr/local/share/doc/reader/.  Preliminary drafts of info pages should be there as well.

The heart of these programs is a large collection of tests on specific reading books.  In this set there are about 320 such tests at present, and each one is a separate file.  This has advantages in terms of continuously adding new tests, but also some huge, and rather obvious disadvantages.  One of these is that it is totally impractical to put licensing information on each of these very short files.  If necessary I can undertake to consolidate these records into a single large file with GPL notice appended.

Aside from the standard libraries and ncurses, no dependencies are known to me.  That may change, however, as I tackle the problem of printing out hard copies of student records.  I'm not proficient enough to know what's going to be involved there.  For now the existing code should be usable, but as alpha, with at least one known fatal bug.
