Hello,

Currently your project is approved at Savannah, as non-GNU.

As far as I understand, Karl's reply means there is another project, GNU or waiting to be GNU, working on a packaging system. Karl said there can't be two packaging systems for the GNU project.

Now, I am not sure your project is just a packaging system, and maybe Karl didn't understood your request.

If you think there was a misunderstanding, you might want to reask GNU Eval to check your project, by clearly specifying what it is meant for and what it does.

The GNU Eval team just made some changes in their webpages:
http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html

There, you can find a questionnaire that you can fill in and send to them so they can study it.

Ok?

Does this mean I can't my project will not be submitted as a GNU project at savannah?

Hello again I wrote to -email is unavailable- and here is what they wrote me back:

Hello Iuri,
Thanks for writing.
You can use the GPL for any software you write, at your discretion. Here is one web page with information about how to do so:
  http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html
There are also instructions for doing so at the end of the GPL text itself.  We hope you do use the GPL!

If you meant to offer islack as a package for the GNU system, that's a different question than licensing islack under the GPL.  If you did mean that, thank you very much for the offer, but it wouldn't make sense for another packaging system to be part of GNU, as another volunteer has already been working on packaging support, and the approach and format are pretty well fixed at this point.

Best regards,
Karl

I approved your project.

Answers: No and Yes :)

The principle of the evaluation process is to check licensing issues and teach you about copyright and license notices. Once you have done it correctly once, we trust you for doing it later on :)

I approved your project as non-GNU in a first step. If you want your project to be reviewed by the GNU evaluation team, please write to -email is unavailable- stating the name of your project. They will send you a questionnaire then.

Hello here is the script now gpl-ized :). I have 2 questions. Is it needed to approve each new version/new script/new programme or not? And will I get some kind of access to upload the newer versions/additional scripts directly to a server?

Mon 09 May 2005 08:38:02 PM UTC, comment #5:

Hi,

This license is compatible with the GNU GPL, so you can release your modified script under the GNU GPL.

If you still want to release it under the original non-copylefted license, this is fine with us; however, you need to add a copyright notice to legally state that you are the author of the changes.

In either case, please send an updated version of the script for me to review :)

Sylvain Beucler <Beuc>
Mon 09 May 2005 01:24:44 PM UTC, comment #4:

OK I agree to that - hosting the tools for my GNU/Linux distro.
About the license stuff. Since it is based on a existing script, I would like it to be released under the same license&copyright and just mark it that it is a modification made by me. It's now just one script but soon the script number will grow and the ones writte completly by me will be released unde GPL. Here is the License&Copyright for the current script I also attach the source:

"Linux" is just a kernel of a more complex system that we like to refer to as GNU/Linux, to emphasize the ideals of the Free Software movement.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html.

We can help by providing the usual Savannah services. By 'organisational', I refer to the trackers and the mailing lists (opposed to CVS with is more development-oriented).

If you agree with hosting only the tools developed for your GNU/Linux distro, then we need to check the source code.

We wish to review it, even if it is not functional, to catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GPL you must include a copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.  This is explained in http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.  Our review would help catch potential omissions such as these.

Ok I understand. I missed that with the iso-hosting. You can help me with script developing then. I'm now modifying the installpkg script which is a script for installing packages it´s now able to install bz2 packages. But I also want to change some other stuff in the packaging-system for example make a updating-script that will build directly from source, every package has it's own building script and package description this script should produce a valid package and then install it. If you think you can help with that, things will go faster. What organisational purposes do you mean? Building a community for my Linux Distribution?

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

As mentioned in the registration pages, we do not host complete distros, distros isos, packages repositories, etc, for space and bandwidth reasons. We may just offer support for organisational purpose and in-house developed software (such as iso creation scripts).

How do you plan to use the Savannah services?

This project is a GNU Linux Distribution which is security focused. It is based on Slackware which source code can be found on http://slackware.com/. The current project page is http://marksman.beplaced.com/. At the moment the distribution has 2 Installation CDs (1400 MB) and next release will be shrinked to 1 installation CD (700 MB). The packaging format is *.tgz the same as in Slackware. The aim of the Project is to bring a free and secure OS
by default - system configuration is hardent and many penetration tools are included to test your security or the security of your network&remote machines (this will be usefull for administrators). Here is a list of packages that were added to the distribution it was based on:
