hi

my program detect the nvidia/ati features trough opengl extensions, I do a glGetString(GL_EXTENSIONS);
then I check if the extensions is avaliable, if yes I can use it ;)

I will try make my project without a host then...

thank you Sylvain

Ok.

I do not have a clear understanding on how the program detects the availability of the ATI/nVidia features, but since at no point the user of a Savannah project should be put in disavantage when using only free software, your project cannot be hosted here.

Savannah is willing to provide resources and time to developers writing Free Software that can be used without the need to ask permission from proprietary software vendor.

If, someday, you get free of those dependencies, do not hesitate to resubmit your project.

Thank you for your understanding.

hi,

I need some opengl extensions from the drivers, such as nv_texture_rectangle, nv_vertex_program, ati_envmap_bumpmap, nv_ext_Cg and others. if they are present in the pc that are running my program I will use them to enhance the graphics performance and quality but if the video card is other the program will run but with "low" quality.

The nvidia and ati drivers are optional to run my program, but if they are present I will use the opengl extensions that come with it.

Hi,

Those are the video cards drivers; do they provide you with a way to use their OpenGL extensions as well?

Both drivers are unfortunately proprietary (non-free).
nVidia apparently does not allow changes to the software, and limits the scope to Unix-like OSes, while free software is free for "anyone, anywhere".

Anyway, if your code does not depend on these drivers, there would not be an issue.

I do not really see how you plan to use OpenGL. Will you write code specific to ATI's and nVidia's OpenGL SDK? You will need to write two versions of the game, right?

hi

ati's  drivers for linux page: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

nvidia's driver for linux:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html
I think that nvidia driver is free software, because in nvidia's license I found this line:

"2.1.2 Linux/FreeBSD Exception. Notwithstanding the foregoing
terms of Section 2.1.1, SOFTWARE designed exclusively for use on the Linux or FreeBSD operating systems, or other operating systems derived from the source code to these operating systems, may be copied and redistributed, provided that the binary files thereof are not modified in any way (except for unzipping of compressed files)."

Hi,

Your project can be free software if the ATI and nVidia toolkits are free software. Could you give me some pointers to the GNU/Linux version of these drivers, and possibly their source code? I had troubles finding information on them.

Of course, we strongly suggest that you avoid relying on proprietary software, be it at Savannah or anywhere else.

hi
I can't use Mesa because I want use some features that are specific to nVidia's and ATI's opengl versions, then I think that my project doesn't match with the definition of free software.

thank you
abner

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

Note that Savannah supports projects of the Free Software movement, not projects of the Open Source movement.

We are careful about ethical issues and insist on producing software that is not dependent on proprietary software.

While Open Source as defined by its founders means something pretty close to Free Software, it's frequently misunderstood.  For more information, please see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html.

What version of OpenGL do you plan to use? Some versions, such as SGI's, are proprietary and cannot be used in a free software project. Mesa is a nice free software alternative.

Description:

LutaPraKct is an sprite based game engine for 2d sprite games. With my package you can make nice games and they will be "os portable" to GNU/Linux, mac os and cygwin. Other game engines like LutaPraKct exists (MUGEM) but they are very old, with internal resolution = 640, no opensource and don't use hardware acceleration, my engine can use 1280+ internal resolution, is free software (and opensource) and can use hardware acceleration through SDL/OpenGL for effects like bump maping, blending, fade in/fade out, multi sample, anysotropy textures, blurs, and other (all using opengl extensions).

The main goal of this engine is make moderns 2d fight games with no diference to 2d comercial fight games (such as king of fighters and steer fights ).

The engine will be written with c++ only but I dont have yet any source.
