Free package(s) attacked:
main package:
- Kannel: Open Source WAP and SMS gateway
additional packages:
- OpenSSL
Who developed it:
The Kannel project was founded by Wapit
ltd. in June, 1999. Wapit Ltd. was founded on October 6th 1998 in
Helsinki, Finland to organize the work of the team which had built the
most extensive set of SMS services so far.
3G LAB (www.3glab.com) is currently (Jun,2001) developing a WTLS layer for Kannel.
But it's not the only one to have started doing this so it's unsure who will be the maintainer of this project in the future.
Feature or functionality endangered:
The Kannel Project removed the RC5-Algorithmus from their software and decided to pass the buck to OpenSSL. Users who want to have Kannel with WTLS support have to link the software against libraries released by the OpenSSL-Team. Kannel only handles the protocal details and the OpenSSL Libs (libcrypto) handle the actual encryption algorithmus.
What the patent covers: It covers the widely used RC5 encryption algorithmus
Patent holders: RSA
Patent numbers: US5724428, US5835600
patent expires: (indicating also the country.)
Outcome: Kannel can't be used with all the possibly features in countries where the Patent for RC5 is forced
