i think current libtool 2.x releases handle this better by nuking all of .libs and discarding error output

This is a standalone use of libtool 1.4.2.

$ libtool --mode=clean rm main
rm main _libs/main _libs/mainS.o _libs/lt-main
rm: cannot remove `_libs/mainS.o': No such file or
directory
rm: cannot remove `_libs/lt-main': No such file or
directory
rmdir _libs

$ echo $?
1


"main" was built using:

main: main.o libtest.la
        libtool gcc $^ -o $@

This occurs both on Linux (Debian 2.2 / i386), and
cygwin 1.3.x
