Before we can start making a suggestion, someone (and it's not going to be me) needs to identify an appropriate shell to suggest, i.e. a free-software implementation of the Bourne shell language that is adequately POSIX compliant for autoconf's purposes, but can itself be built on a system that doesn't have any such shell.  This will probably be an old release of either bash or ksh.

We'd need to research an appropriate old release of bash (or whatever).  Note that the systems that don't have any shell where $(...) doesn't work are even older than the systems where it doesn't work in /bin/sh, and are probably only of interest for retrocomputing nowadays, so this is low priority.
