But if it's a legitimate thing for all math environments, it might be worthwhile adding them automatically like it doens for (so that "align" gets added as well as "align").

Thanks for your answer. The versions with the + sign are introduced by the autonum package (https://ctan.org/pkg/autonum) to tag an equation even if it is not referenced in the rest of the document. Thus they are semi-standard.
Concerning github, I just find it more convenient and practical (e.g. I couldn't find a way to view and edit the code here on savannah) - but then again this probably comes from the fact that I'm more used to working with github.
