ps: i'm hoping this is something that may be viewed as trivial but if there's anything i could do to make it more that way (i.e. formatting or documentation) then let me know and i'll look into it

fmt assumes a width of 8, which is pretty annoying when that's not the case.  the attached patched 'fmt.c' includes a new option (-T/--tab) to specify the width of the tab during calculations.

this should also, possibly, mandate the use of tabs on output (i.e. set the 'tabs' boolean variable) but currently doesn't effect that.
