At least in the yacc.c template, it appears that the user-provided yyoverflow() routine already supports what you seem to want.

depending on grammar and the input a parser stack
overflow may be forced, resulting in possibly exit(),
depending on bison version. (Is this documented)
lemon parser has a way to set a custom routine for this.
Can bison have this too and some more documentation on it.
