GNU cpio - Summary
This project is part of the GNU Project.
GNU cpio copies files into or out of a cpio or tar archive. The archive can be another file on disk, a magnetic tape, a pipe, etc.
GNU cpio supports a variety of archive formats: binary, old ASCII,
new ASCII, crc, HPUX binary, HPUX old ASCII, old tar, POSIX.1 tar.
The package is moving toward merging with GNU tar into a POSIX-compatible pax program.

GNU cpio version 2.9 was released today. Starting from this release the package is licensed under the GPL version 3.

GNU cpio 2.8 is available from ftp.gnu.org and its mirrors.
New in this release:
- Option --owner can be used in copy-out mode, allowing to uniformly override ownership of the files being added to the archive.
- Bugfixes:
- Symlinks were handled incorrectly in copy-out mode.
- Fix handling of large files.
- Fix setting the file permissions in copy-out mode.
- Fix CAN-2005-1111

The version 2.7 of GNU cpio was released today. As usual, it is available from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/cpio (and its mirrors).

Cpio version 2.5.90 is available from ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/cpio. This is an alpha release. A list of user-visible changes since version 2.5 follows:
