What is the status on this, Chris? Do you still wish to see this go in?

Havent looked at the patch yet but what you propose is fine. Unfortunately, we are in feature freeze currently as there is only one active branch for nano, and that is the stable 2.2 branch. When 2.3 opens, which will probably be soon since there have been few new bugs recently reported on the 2.2 series, I'll fork that branch and start 2.3 development. This can be the first or second feature added to 2.3.

I made a patch that will add a noread option that can be used with the commandline parameters -n and --noread
Basically, with this option every file that is given on the commandline will be treated as a new file, so nano will not try to read the file. This is useful because it allows nano to write to named pipes, normally when you try `$nano fifo' nano will hang because there is no input on the pipe. With the noread option nano starts with a blank buffer and will write to the pipe when the user tries to save the file. This way nano can be used as an editor in combination with for instance gpg without having to write sensitive data to disk first.
