This is (hopefully) the last release of the stable 1.4.x series; the next stable release will be M4 1.6.

M4 development can now be tracked via git access, rather than CVS. See https://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=m4 for details. For now, the git and CVS repositories are manually synced. Eventually, CVS write access will be disabled, but the plan is to leave CVS read access.

This release fixes two more long-standing bugs and, importantly, brings the
behaviour of m4 in the presence of missing files in line with the future 2.0
release:
New in 1.4.4: 20 October 2005
- ./configure --infodir=/usr/share/info now works correctly.
- When any file named on the command line is missing exit with status 1.
