It would be great if that option had a switch for
copying all comments in the dump and expand the
build tree (with or without build commands). Beside
debugging, that should be used to properly document
a project and the build tree, e.g. using doxygen

Further thought:

I note that this proposal is analogous to gcc -E.

Also: you should be able to specify a list of variables that should not be expanded in the output.

It would be nice to be able to invoke make so it dumps out the Makefile as it will run, after includes, and optionally, with some or all variables expanded that can be expanded statically.
