This functionality exists in CVS currently (C-a |).

It would be most excellent if Screen were also able to split the region horizontally the way it can now do vertically.  Like Emacs, which has both C-x 2 (split-window-vertically, the equivalent of Screen's C-a S) and C-x 3 (split-window-horizontally, which sadly has no Screen equivalent).
