Assume you are running jobs that fail, if they are spawned too fast (e.g. against a rate limited server), but you want GNU Parallel to figure out the delay by itself.

So GNU Parallel should automatically guess the correct value and use that. GNU Parallel should be also be able to handle if the value changes.

If --delay ends in 'auto': Use X as starting value and adjust.

delta=d=X

Try --delay d

if success:
  # Adjust slowly downwards
  delta /= 1.1
else
  # Adjust fast upwards
  delta*=2
d=0.9*d+0.1*delta
