"pop" is a typo in my configuration I only noticed after filing this bug :-).  I've since changed it to "port".  Sorry for the confusion.

Reading your link, they are talking about the .authinfo file format.
It is similar, extends the .netrc format by adding 'port' and 'force' keywords.

What exactly is the 'pop' keyword in your example ?

Thanks for the info, didn't even know about those extensions :-)

The corresponding Wget2 issue is https://gitlab.com/gnuwget/wget2/issues/292.

Gnus extends the syntax for ~/.netrc by adding two keywords: "force" and "port" (cf. http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/gnus/NNTP.html#index-nntp_002dauthinfo_002dfunction-2003).  Using a ~/.netrc with for example "port" keywords causes wget to complain:

| [tim@passepartout ~]$ wget -O /dev/null https://www.gnu.org/
| --2017-09-20 03:01:57--  https://www.gnu.org/
| wget: /home/tim/.netrc:3: unbekannter Wortteil »port«
| wget: /home/tim/.netrc:3: unbekannter Wortteil »25«
| wget: /home/tim/.netrc:4: unbekannter Wortteil »pop«
| wget: /home/tim/.netrc:4: unbekannter Wortteil »110«

However, it is easy to work around this issue if one does never use ~/.netrc for wget purposes by setting "netrc = off" in ~/.wgetrc:

| [tim@passepartout ~]$ echo 'netrc = off' > .wgetrc && wget -O /dev/null https://www.gnu.org/

It would be much better if wget supported the Gnus syntax extensions natively.  For most practical purposes, ignoring "force" and "port" keywords would probably be enough as entries with those keywords are unlikely intended for wget, but of course implementing the semantics for wget as well would be even better.

AFAICT, this issue also applies to wget2.
