I can't reproduce the following point : "export [...] just the 2D or 3D version (as Export currently does)". If I export a design from Settings / Board Appearance, the export file contains everything needed for both 2d and 3d. This is with the current version, not 1.01, but I don't think there were any significant changes in this area.

The only exception is if gnubg was built without 3d support. This could happen on a linux system where the required libraries are not installed. Then, only the 2d part is exported.

Could you confirm that you still have the problem ? You seem to suggest you can export either the 2d or the 3d part of the design entry ; how do you do this ?

I won't object if someone implements this but for now I'm just posting this to document how people can export one or more full board designs rather than just the 2D or 3D version (as Export currently does).

First, locate your private design file.  On Windows it's boards.xml in one of your standard private Windows directories.

Next, make a copy of the file.

Finally, edit the copy and remove everything but the design(s) you wish to export.  With Windows it's best to use Wordpad since Notepad often leaves the terminating "</design>" entry on a separate line outside of the normal screen display.  It  probably works fine but is confusing.

That's it.  Don't worry about the comment entry at the top as it's stripped when it's later imported.  And naturally you can send your entire boards.xml file to someone who can then import it.
