Short story: In egrep 2.5.4, backslashes are required to preserve the meaning of alteration and grouping characters. This means any script written with egrep 2.5.3 and prior will no longer function, and there seems to be no way to write a regular expression that will function with both egrep 2.5.4 and egrep 2.5.3

The same, of course, is true for grep -E (rather than egrep).
