This is actually fixed as the text now reads SWF (not "shockwave")

Actually Adobe uses "ShockwaveFlash" in many places, so I'm not really sure this is a bug. For example, the mime type is
x-shockwave-flash. Other swf files have the string "P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" embedded in them.

The change from Flash to SWF was because of a nasty letter Adobe sent Canonical about trademark issues. So I was asked to change it by Canonical and didn't consider it a big deal. SWF is the file format, and flash is actually the name of the trademarked creation application.

I've always found this a bit odd too. At the very least it should be the other way round: "Gnash is a (shockwave) flash player and plugin for Firefox and Konqueror". Also, as someone went through the entire codebase replacing flash with SWF, we could also do it there (well, I can't, but someone with admin privileges could).

Gnash plays SWF files, and SWF stands for ShockWave Flash. While it is true that there is another product known as "Shockwave", I think in the sentence you quoted is intended to say that Gnash plays SWF files.

On the website
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/gnash/

is the text:
Gnash is a flash (shockwave) player and plugin for Firefox and Konqueror.

But as I heard from some tech-guys:
flash != shockwave, neither compatible, nor a extension
shockwave isn't available for Linux and never was

So the above text, which I copied from the given website, is wrong. But maybe I didn't understand the whole flash/shockwave thing.

Best regards,
Benjamin Schmidt
