The most likely cause for this unwanted line breaking is that the text inserted into the middle of a long line was pasted. If the pasted text contains a final newline, on Putty this gets converted to a Ctrl+Enter, which is a ^J, which means Justify.

Cannot reproduce. Does it happen only on Windows, and only while using PuTTY. If also elsewhere, please include an example file and the version info of your nano.

There is a nowrap option available for use in nanorc; or, if you want, you can launch nano with the -w flag.

I first discovered this bug when editing a php.ini file. I thought the file had been installed incorrectly when in fact nano had incorrectly "wrapped" the last word on the long line. The issue is apparent regardless of file contents. I don't edit html much with nano but it's especially bothersome when making a minor change to an html paragraph.

Reproducing the error:

Load any simple text file with lines longer than the screen width and insert text in the middle of a long line. In some cases the line scrolls and disappears correctly (I see a '$') and in other cases it simply breaks at the right margin and pushes the end of the line to the next line. The wrapping is inconsistent. I have not discovered what causes the the wrapping but moving to the end of the line and removing the LF corrects the line length.

This issue makes it difficult to edit config files with certainty. Saving and reloading confirms the LF was indeed written before the end of the line.
