Hi

this is taking more effort and time than I have predicted at first. As mentioned earlier, it may be better to close it and I'll ask to be reopen when it's all more mature. Hopefully not too long.

Hi

we'll need to remake the site and the package submission process since the first was very dependent on php and the second on the sourceforge forum.

I'm working on it but it takes time and only when that's ready can we make the move. Hope that's understable. I'm sorry that the process is taking so long but we have deep roots there which are taking some time to cut.

Allowing general post-commit scripts is a security problem, especially something that complicated.

Instead of trying to hook into svn, I'd suggest running something from cron that detects new versions and does the necessary work.  Then it would be entirely under your control, too, which is surely desirable.

Hi Karl

one more question. Is it possible to have specific post-commit scripts for our SVN repository. We would like to have one to tar one of the packages, upload it when a new tag is created, and generate the new documentatino for the site.

My mistake.  I haven't tried it either, but I have no reason to suspect it doesn't work, I just never knew about it.  (I even looked for a way before I sent my reply, but didn't see it.  Oh well ...)

thanks for the quick correction.  that is good news.

I haven't tried it, but do you mean this button doesn't work, then?

Hi Carne -- regarding bug assignments, gnu.org vs. nongnu.org shouldn't
make a difference.  But only members of project xyz can deal with bugs
for xyz.  They can be given pretty restricted permissions, I believe,
but they have to be members.

Also, I fear savannah has no way to directly move a bug from one project
to another.  Depending on the total volume of bugs compared to
mis-submitted bugs, I begin to wonder about making "octave-forge" a bug
category within octave, instead of using its own tracker ... just an
idea ... anyway ...

Yes, nongnu has static web hosting (with simple ssi, but no cgi or other
dynamic stuff) and ftp/rsync/www (and mirrors) for releases.

Best,
karl

Hi

apologies for the time is taking us to sort this out. We had a long discussion about this and some other administrative are also being sorted out. I have a few questions to help us finish our decision.

This project is very close to the GNU octave project. It is common for users to submit us bugs that actually belong to GNU octave (and vice-versa). As such, is it possible to assign bugs between the 2 projects by a person that only belongs to one of the projects? Also, is this still possible if one of the projects is in nongnu.org and the other in gnu.org?

> We do not want to be used as a mere mirror of a project developed

> Savannah.

If we do move then we'll move everything. We also do not wish to have the project spread over multiple places. if I undestood correctly by reading your GNU dev resources, there would be static web hosting and a FTP server for releases. Is this also true for nongnu.org?

Thanks in advance, Carnë

Hi.

I am waiting for an answer from you.

Please write a response in this tracker within one week, else I will
delete the submission.  You still will be able to resubmit the project
again once you have enough time to deal with the registration process.

If you are no longer planning use GNU Savannah please let us know.  We
won't bite, and it will make us gain time.

Regards.

Ok.

If there's a problem with moving pages to GNU Savannah please let us
know.

Please include a (perhaps temporary) URL pointing directly to the
source code.  Alternatively, you can forward the code to me by email
or attach it to this tracker.

We wish to review your source code, even if it is not functional, to
catch potential legal issues early.

For example, to release your program properly under the GNU GPL you
must include a copyright notice and permission-to-copy statements at
the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any file more than
10 lines long.  This is explained in
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.  Our review would help
catch potential omissions such as these.

Note that sending code to our repositories is a release, since the
code will then be publicly available through anonymous access.

At your option we can continue the registration process in the (D)VCS
repository you choose.  This means I would approve the project just
now provided you agree to fix any remaining or further issue (If any)
as soon as possible.

I will close this task when I can check all is ok but please bear in
mind you must follow the hosting requirements as long as you do use
GNU Savannah.

Regards.

They aren't important. They are rarely used or maintained. We don't
mind sacrificing them. We'll contact the authors to see if there is
possibility of a licensing change, but we can forget about those
packages if the authors don't respond.

Sorry, I mistyped. I meant it's always been hosted in Sourceforge. We
want to move it to Savannah, except, perhaps, for the webpages, but we
want to move the bugtracking, mailing lists, and code hosting to
Savannah.

Thanks,

Hi.

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in GNU Savannah.
You can reach the rest Savannah hackers (Staff) in this list:
http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/savannah-hackers-public.

Everything hosted in GNU Savannah should adhere to GNU Savannah
hosting requirements.

Is there a package under a proprietary license?.  If so, how could it
be negligible?.

To follow the GNU coding standards is a good practice, but it's not a
hosting requirement.

> This has always been hosted on Savannah [...]

But you linked to SourceForge.  What happens?.

GNU Savannah is a central point for development, distribution and
maintenance of GNU Software and other free software.

We do not want to be used as a mere mirror of a project developed
elsewhere.  Your project development should happen primarily on
Savannah.

A new project has been registered at Savannah
This project account will remain inactive until a site admin approves or discards the registration.

Registration Administration

While this item will be useful to track the registration process, approving or discarding the registration must be done using the specific Group Administration page, accessible only to site administrators, effectively logged as site administrators (superuser):

Registration Details

  • Name: Octave-Forge
  • System Name:  octforge
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: Other (It's mostly GPLv2 or later, but there are other licenses in the packages. They are almost all free; we're happy to drop the non-free packages.

For organisational purposes, we would like a separate hg repo per package. Is it possible to assign many repos to a single project? If not, I would also be happy to help patch Savannah to do whatever is required to allow this.)

Description:

This is GNU Octave's sister project for Octave packages. Except for a few negligible packages, all of the Octave-Forge packages are under a free license and are mostly GNU compatible (they use the right terminology, etc) but they don't nececessarily follow GNU coding standards in style.

This has always been hosted on Savannah, but this confuses Octave users who don't see a separation between Octave and Octave-Forge, and it's practically the same community that maintains and uses both, so it makes sense to have them all in one place.

Other Comments:

We're not uploading a tarball yet, because there really isn't a single tarball, but rather one per Octave-Forge package.
