(just moving this to a Savannah issue in the hopes that it'll be better tracked here, and plus I'm not subscribed to bug-autoconf anyways, so I don't necessarily receive replies to it unless people remember to CC me)
(also distributing the m4.m4 file with the rest of autoconf's macro files might be worthwhile, too, so that users can have the AC_PROG_GNU_M4 macro available for their own use)
