With autoconf master 8a0900 (~2020-03-18), Flex 2.6.4 is failing like this:

checking for strtol... yes
./configure: command substitution: line 16785: syntax error near unexpected token `then'
./configure: command substitution: line 16785: `then :'
./configure: line 16777:  = xyes
then :
  cat >>confdefs.h <<_ACEOF
[pages of configure script]

There's an upstream patch which fixes this, but that might be more by accident than design and the regression isn't intentional:
