There's now an autocd feature for interactive mode.  Presumably it didn't exist back in 2006, but it does now, so this item should be closed.

   I wish to execute directories under bash. Actually if you want to go to a directory you need to execute the builtin command "cd". Why can we juste execute a directory.
polaris:~# /etc/
polaris:/etc# ../usr/

You can find attached patch example for execute_cmd.c (made from bash 3.1-5 sources from debian/sid package).
