Hello.

As this task is very old and has been inactive for several years I'm
closing it.

Personally I would love to have Darcs implemented at GNU Savannah.

If you're still interested in adding support to Savane please mail
savannah-hackers-public@gnu.org.

Regards.

Hi,

Restricted shell is fine.

To answer your first question, darcs 2 over http is just served up by the webserver.  To speed things up over ssh, darcs 2 does offer a server mode (actually, the darcs command itself), which would be very good to have.

Darcsweb does appear to be a nice product.  There is also the trac+darcs integration :-)

Now, I'll return to the darcs team and see if we can get you a long term contact and somebody to implement this.  We'll keep in touch!

Hey, sorry for the delay.

Hmmm, I didn't know you were a darcs developer.

The best would be to get a long-term contact, who would check how to implement the service in the Savane code base, as well as on the server side, taking into account some of the constraints we have. (s)He could also, when the service is operational, answer punctual questions e.g. about upgrades. If (s)he becomes a Savannah Hacker, that would be perfect :)

So yes, the code is at:
git clone git://git.savannah.nongnu.org/savane-cleanup.git
There recent Git, Mercurial and bzr support in the commit history can show you easily what to do for the frontend part. This can also be done by looking for "git" in the source and adding similar inline code for darcs.

As far as the server-side go, our base security principle is that we do not offer local access. Currently we either offer restricted shell (e.g. git-shell) that only accept the VCS command, or we offer SFTP access (but the integration is not as good). Similarly, commit hooks are installed automatically, or by the Savannah hackers if that's not implemented yet (e.g. commit notification mail).

So the first question we'll ask ourselves now is then: does darcs2 offer a server-side - or does it rely on a "dumb" protocol?

Having somebody maintain the Debian backport is a priority too - it's difficult to keep up with security issues and possibly new versions if the package isn't available through APT.

Last we'll need to install a web viewer. 'darcsweb' looks good at first glance (I haven't tried to install it though), but maybe there are other suggestions for Savannah.

Before to make the service available sitewide, usually we start a beta phase where the service may change, which a few projects that will use darcs and report problems. Once we're confident that the system is stable and can scale to hundreds of projects, we enable it :)

We have now created an entry on our bug tracker:
http://bugs.darcs.net/issue981

I presume the thing for us to do is
  git clone git://git.savannah.nongnu.org/savane-cleanup.git
and hack away?

We darcs folks woul be delighted to do what it takes to make it possible for people to use darcs on Savannah!

Please let us know how we can help.

Hi,

It's more likely to happen if you implement it :)
Do you have time to contribute?

It would be also nice to have somebody keep an up-to-date darcs2 package at backports.org (like git, hg and bzr). It's way easier to keep track of updates / security issues this way.

Hello!  Now that the new, more mature, darcs 2 has been released, I would like you to consider supporting it on savannah.  Thanks!

We do not provide shell accounts - we believe it is a security and integrity risk we cannot afford.

Darcs looks interesting among all the new SCMs, however we prefer to support mature ones first (it's a matter of human resources, keeping track of SCMs' evolutions is time consuming).

Hello,
I just wanted you to know that I am a user of savannah that would like you to support Darcs (http://darcs.net/), a version control system.
I currently have a project that I'd like to put somewhere and I am considering various alternative posibilities because I am using Darcs already.
I believe supporting Darcs shouldn't be to hard as long as you give shell accounts.
I know you may be in process of supporting GNU Arch/tla. Personally, I have used them both and I find GNU Arch so complex (compared to Darcs) that I prefeer not to use it again.
Thank you.
