Hmm.  Sorry, I should have updated this bug; I guess I lost track of it.  It's actually been fixed in CVS already...  Thanks for working in a patch though!

Before installing a fresh copy of make 3.80 I happily erased the old make and thus needed the build.sh bootstrap compilation file to generate the make binary. Unfortunately the REMOTE variable is not evaluated und thus still in the *-in condition. This leads to an error in compilation. I manually set it to 'stub' and this worked. After that I could build make and then rebuild make again with the bootstrapped make.

I do not know how to fix properly so I leave it up to you guys. It's also not very important, it would just be nice if in the next round of releases this could be addressed.
