As far as I understand there are 2 things involved in the equation: the flasher and the computer being flashed.

As for the computer being flashed I've no idea if this has a big impact or not.

For the flasher it does have a huge impact as the issue here is that it sometimes can't provide enough mA to power up the flash chip (and it usually powers things around the flash chip as well, even if that's not ideal).

There are several approaches that can be combined here.

The first one works for all cases: users / contributors need to buy a multimeter that can measure voltage, and if the voltage of the chip is 0v then it means that there is not enough mA flowing and that because of this issue the voltage dropped to 0. So in this an case external 3.3v source needs to be used. Instructions need to be written to do that.

Another solution which depends on the previous one is to use the previously written instructions and test combinations of flasher and computers and see what works without external power supply.

Personally I use an external power supply with my main flasher that is based on an Arduino that I power up at 3.3v instead of 5v. The downside is that it's difficult to use in practice as I've to adjust everything before/during each flash attempt.

To do that I've bought a tiny adapter that has 5v in input and that can lower voltage but each time I've to adjust it with a screwdriver and I've to measure everything, so a more simple 5V->3.3v voltage regulator that is always at 3.3v would be order of magnitudes better.

I take the voltage/current from an USB port on my laptop, but since the input is an USB connector I can also use phone chargers, etc.

Hello everyone,

    I hope you’re all doing well. I’ve brought up this topic in a few mailing lists (+ forums), and the general consensus seems to be that the section in the T400 concerning a dedicated 3.3V PSU isn't widely used by most users [1]. From the limited discussions I’ve initiated, this seems to be the prevailing conclusion.

Similarly, documentation shared by other users doesn't seem to recommend external PSUs[2], unless they’re working with the BeagleBone Black[3]. Given this, I wanted to open an issue request to provide clearer guidance for future installers on whether a dedicated 3.3V PSU is necessary or applicable in most scenarios. And if it is, how to purchase/utilize one.

It might be more helpful to advise users to ensure their power supply provides at least 3A (or more, depending on the flasher) to guarantee sufficient power for the device.

While I’m not an electrician by trade and may not fully understand all the technical details, I believe this discussion could greatly benefit from improvements in the documentation. This would enable more users to successfully install GNU Boot on their machines.
