I cannot reproduce the bug with the instructions provided below. I get the expected behavior. Looks like it has been fixed in the meantime.

when you put the cursor at the right (in the math field) of the a^2 expression
then press shift+left arrow to select the a^2
the press (
if like me you have "automatic double ()" in the perf
you will see the result as a(^2) instead of (a^2)

not very important problem :-)
