Not having enough data, I can only conjecture: probably because 'SCHILY.fflags' is not used in this case.

Ideally, yes.  But as I noted in my previous posting, 'SCHILY.fflags' is not supported by GNU tar.  If you could supply a patch, it would be more than welcome.

I'm able to extract archive-7G.tar using GNU tar as old as version 1.29.  By the way, it is archived using GNU extensions, so it's quite natural it is handled properly by GNU tar.

Hi Sergey,

Thank you for your prompt response.

But why is there a problem only from >=8GB size?

I would expect that if I archive a file using bsdtar it would be handled the same way by tar no matter the size of the file.

Also one of my colleagues has noticed that when he archived the example files (attached in this comment) they don't have the 'SCHILY.fflags', and yet the tar can't handle them.

There is the only difference, in the "size=" property in the archive metadata which may cause this issue. (see at attached .png image of the diff made using 'vbindiff')

file #52636, file #52637)

The only member of the archive file in question is stored using the SCHILY.fflags extended attribute, which is not supported (yet) by GNU tar.  So it handles the archive as expected.

This issue was reported on RHEL distro (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2037839)
, but affects the Fedora as well on the latest tar build.

Tar raises an error when trying to extract big files archived by bsdtar.

Error message:
tar: Ignoring unknown extended header keyword 'LIBARCHIVE.xattr.security.selinux'
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

You can easily reproduce it using the reproducer and testing file attached to this bug.
Just run the 'tarissue.sh' file.
