maxima's run_testbench(share_tests=true)
in sbcl, clisp and ecl needs < 5% of the RAM of my Computer (4 GB of RAM, 8 Gigabytes of SWAP).

gcl runs out of memory even if the computer has 12 Gigabytes of RAM.

a GCL_MEM_MULTIPLE=0.2 resolves the problem and shows that gcl is capable of running the testbench much faster than the other lisps.

As GCL performs fine under other circumstances the probability is high that the problem isn't a bug in gcl nor in maxima, but that currently the combination of maxima and gcl seems to cause something problematic involving the garbage collector.

Was asked to file a bug on the maxima mailing list. Don't know if that was necessary, though...
