I think the real problem is that pathname-type is not unspecific too, like pathname-version. Unix doesn't have either one, numerous customs notwithstanding. DIRECTORY-READ should really be returning pathnames with just a name component on Unix, e.g. "my-diary.txt.gpg~". That seems VASTLY less troublesome than guessing. I'll throw in a glob function as a consolation. :-)

To reproduce:

1. In Edwin, browse a directory in dired where you have some numbered autosave files, e.g., 'foo.txt.~12~'. Position your cursor on one of these files.

2. M-: (ge '(edwin dired))

3. M-: (pathname-type (dired-current-pathname))

Expected behavior is that it returns "txt", since that is the file type.

Actual behavior is that it returns "~12~".
