What about inspecting the package using your ordinary tools?
If you work on the command line, you can untar the package,
inspect it, then run sourceinstall on the unpacked directory.

If you use GUIs, I think there are many file system browsers, which can be used to inspect the contents of the package without having to extract it manually. You could even add a 'sourceinstall current directory' context item to your preferred file browser.
