This task has been inactive for almost 2 years, and I would like to close it -- unless, if anyone sees a reason to keep it around anyway?

OK, so we really do need to add a parameter to indicate the desired docbook version, on the assumption that the user has written their documentation in one and only one version of docbook.

My understanding is that there is no relationship between the DocBook version and the XSL version (other than that sufficiently old versions of the XSL had no DocBook 5 version, of course).  It is the case that each (recent) XSL release includes both a DocBook 4 (non-ns) version and a DocBook 5 (ns) version.  However, it is not the case that both would necessarily be installed locally on a target system.  For example, in Debian there is a docbook-xsl package containing only the non-ns (v4) XSL and a docbook-xsl-ns package containing only the ns (v5) versions.

Is there some relationship betwee the XSLT version and the Docbook version?  Or does each release of the stylesheets come in both a Docbook5 and Docbook4 flavor?

I think that is a good solution to find if some type of DocBook support is available, but I don't think it would have as much utility to potential users as having separate checks.  The DocBook files in a user's project will likely have one URL set as the xml-stylesheet, so if AX_CHECK_DOCBOOK_XSLT returns true after testing for DocBook 4 but the documents use the DocBook 5 XSLT, which is not available, the check isn't really helping.

If one function is desirable, perhaps adding a parameter for which DocBook version to check, or a return value to indicate which version was found, would be the way to go?

Check out both-versions.patch -- it tries to run the same check with a Docbook5 and then Docbook4 document, and a success with either is taken to mean the relevant docbook version is present.

Hmm, so this requires different ways of looking for the same XSLT files, depending on the docbook DTD version installed?  Would it make sense to use the new test document, and if that fails, try the old one?

Docbook5 introduced an XML namespace for the Docbook elements, which caused a new set of XSL stylesheets to be created.  It would be very convenient if there was a version of AX_CHECK_DOCBOOK_XSLT which would check for these namespaced XSL stylesheets.

The changes needed to make the new macro are very straightforward.  I created a patch against AX_CHECK_DOCBOOK_XSLT which would result in an AX_CHECK_DOCBOOK_XSLT_NS function.  The only significant changes are in the xsl stylesheet url (where xsl is changed to xsl-ns) and in the test document (which no longer has a DTD and instead has a namespace and version element).

The reason I submitted this as a patch, rather than a file ready for inclusion is that I am hoping someone with more M4 knowledge than me can find an elegant way to combine the macros and eliminate all of the code duplication in having 2 separate versions of this function.  If this is not possible, or there is more legwork that I can do to make it happen, please let me know.

Note:  The patch is against a version of AX_CHECK_DOCBOOK_XSLT with the patch from #6909 already applied.
