We actually really do need this feature, in fact I've often done this myself.  But it's not worth postponing 2.2 for so I'll put it in the feature list for 2.3.

Nano must have some locking, to prevent two users (or nano instances) editing the same file.
Much like vi does.

Vim does this checking for its .swp file, but creating a lock file in nano might be a bit over the top for nano's scope.

I'm forwarding this to see what Chris thinks, and if this is WONTFIX, I'll just close the Debian bug.
