Title:
HVAC Thermostats using GNU remotecontrol and the Smart Grid

Abstract:
The HVAC Thermostat has existed for years outside of the remotely controlled arena. The current marketplace offers various devices to change HVAC settings, each with their own combination of features and benefits. The GNU remotecontrol software project has set out to accomplish large scale HVAC Thermostat management and optimize the achievement of climate comfort versus the cost of operation. The Project Maintainer & Coordinator, Stephen H. Dawson, will present on the Background, Solution, and Technical Construct of how they have accomplished HVAC Thermostat Management for the Public Domain to assist in building the Smart Grid.

Summary:
The HVAC Thermostat of today struggles to join the Smart Grid due to an inability to provide remotely controlled HVAC usage and inability to predict HVAC demand, all of which present an impediment to improved HVAC usage. Electricity KWH costs are progressively increasing. The tension to balance HVAC comfort against cost is a constant challenge. GNU remotecontrol provides the ability to simplify Energy Management and determine energy costs through a database driven web application, having a user interface which provides simple to operate check boxes and pull-down menus. The overarching benefit of GNU remotecontrol is to promote the increased adoption of the Smart Grid while also providing additional benefits through data driven decision making. The results are lower costs from optimized HVAC management, further improving the efficiency of existing HVAC implementations. The long-term target of the GNU remotecontrol project is to pave the way for Demand Response through Unattended Server Side Automation.
