I have been grabbing video from other RTMP sites, like videolectures.net just fine. It should work already with the BBC, I'll have to find a URL and test it.

Marking as RTMP as that's the main obstacle at the moment. I wonder if it's possible to get the video with rtmpget.

This SWF is basically the same as the iPlayer, by the way, so once the news videos work, the streaming version of the iPlayer should be close (for those in the UK).

That will change when RTMP is added.

Currently NetConnection::connect pretty much just discards
the url given, we may as well print an UNIMPLEMENTED
message for anything different then NULL, which is used
for other kind of uses (usually real url is given in NetStream::play())

It should be easy to grab the "rtmp:" part of the URL when it's passed to NetConnection, and print a better error message. I'm traveling right now, so maybe one of the other devs can add this.

Thanks for the analysis. In the meantime, it would be great to have better user feedback in this case. Even looking through the logs I wasn't able to work out for myself what the problem was.

A quick check shows the BCC is using port 1935, ala RTMP, so this won't work until my current RTMP work is integrated into Gnash. This is on the TODO list for the next release (3+ months, not 0.8.3). As Adobe claims RTMP is now patented, it's also entirely likely nobody will be able to redistribute this in a binary package, even though it works. Once again software patents screw the end user, and only benefit monopolies. So anyway, the network connection fails because the RTMP handshake doesn't currently work.

I'm gonna have to take "this works" back... I just now discovered that when I updated Ubuntu Hardy the other day, it installed the non-free plugin, which nuked Gnash. :-( So after nuking the non-free plugin, this doesn't work with Gnash cvs HEAD at all. Sorry for the incorrect response. Arg... Since I'm at the Ubuntu Developes Summit now, I reported this bug, and it turns out I
m not the only one having Hardy forcibly install the non-free plugin.

From the log it looks like the timeout message comes
from the SWF itself, not gnash.
Beside, there are many UNIMPLEMENTED messages coming out
from gnash.

Apart from that, I can reproduce what seems an 'hung'
(but waiting some goes passed it)

I suspect this is one of those NetStream event order
related things. I'm running with gstreamer.

Rob, are you using ffmpeg ?

Doesn't seem to obey it. I clicked on gnash to play the stream at 11:55:53, and still get the timeout ten seconds later.

pmac /home/dwmw2 $ grep stream .gnashrc
set streamsTimeout 60

http://david.woodhou.se/gnash-timeout.txt

What network activity should I see after the HTTP request?

You mentioned:

> This eventually says 'Timed out when trying to connect'

Try setting streams timeout to an higher number in your
~/.gnashrc:

# Timeout in seconds for stream download
#
# The download will timeout after the given seconds
# of inactivity. Every activity resets the timer
#
# Default: 10
#
set streamsTimeout 20

The i386 machine mentioned in comment #3 was Fedora 8. What packages might make a difference -- doesn't Gnash do all its network operation for itself?

Can you show the debug output (and a packet trace between you and the avclip.bbc.co.uk) so that we can compare how they differ with what I attached below?

I tested this on an x86 machine running ubuntu Hardy, so my guess is it's probably a PPC related problem. although it could potentially be an issue with Fedora 9.

It's never worked for me either. As far as I know, it's similar to the iPlayer design. If it works for Rob already, that's looking very promising!

Also: when it first starts (before I click on it to start the video playing), is the bottom of the picture supposed to be red?

Any ideas what might be different between your working system and my failing one? I tried building on i386 and that didn't fix it.

What version of Gnash are you running ? (gnash --version) I just tried this link, and with Gnash cvs HEAD, the embedded video plays just fine for me.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7407119.stm ends up invoking gnash (almost) as follows:

/usr/bin/gtk-gnash -j 400 -k 260 -u http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/emp/2_2_2046/player.swf -F 57 -U http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7407119.stm -P allowfullscreen=true -P 'flashvars=config=http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/emp/config/default.xml&companionSize=300x30&companionType=adi&preroll=&config_settings_autoPlay=false&playlist=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.bbc.co.uk%2Fmedia%2Femp%2F7400000%2F7407200%2F7407212.xml&config_plugin_fmtjLiveStats_pageType=eav2&embedReferer=&config_plugin_fmtjLiveStats_edition=Domestic&embedPageUrl=/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7407119.stm&' -P height=260 -P id=bbc_emp_fmtj_embed_emb -P name=embeddedPlayer_7407212 -P src=http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/emp/2_2_2046/player.swf -P type=application/x-shockwave-flash -P width=400 -P wmode=default http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/emp/2_2_2046/player.swf

This eventually says 'Timed out when trying to connect' somewhere lost in the debug output, while the GUI just freezes. There was no traffic between this machine and avclip.bbc.co.uk (217.243.192.52) apart from the following HTTP transaction:
