If it won't get too complicated, the lines that define this abstract GNU constellation can be 0s and 1s. The 0s and 1s will show the digital nature of our data sets and the imperfect models (constellation's shape in this case) we always try to impose on the universe ;-)!

I agree, indeed, the logo has to be in vector graphics to enable displaying in various sizes, with any background. I was also suggesting vector graphics ;-). I only used that raster image in the previous comment as a demonstration on how to put a cow/GNU head in the stars (like the GNU Logo which is SVG). So in short, my suggestion was just like what Mosè mentioned.

The stars can be vectorized easily (as simple black circles, possibly using a red/orange circle for Aldebran to create a nice asymmetry). The 0s and 1s, and lines in my previous suggestion would also be easily vectorized (they are just fonts).

But again, I feel this may become too complicated, so making an abstract GNU head in the form of a constellation would also be interesting. Could you try this?

What about a gnu as a constellation?

dear Mohammad,

as a friend of mine mention to think about what it will look like in various backgrounds, at least white and black, and what it will look like scaled. A vectorial image would be better for this last part, that may be the reason why images are rarely included in logos.. and maybe yes, I think that minimalism and abstract-ness IS important!

This is getting VERY interesting/exciting!

Since this is a creative/brainstorming task, I am just writing as  I think, so you might be able to build upon any part of it.

I really like how you built the constellations over the ribbon that makes the GNU cow head! That was a great idea.

How about this? We can remove the ribbon, then connecting the stars of the Taurus constellation (only the head of the cow, like the image below) with random sequences of 0s and 1s to guide the eye in it being a cow's head with horns.

https://starwalk.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/mar31-banner.jpg?w=726&h=288&crop=1

The 0s and 1s can be printed very small (but not too small) to be more clear only on larger logos, but still faintly clear (as a digital artifact) when printed small?

Further building on this (inspired from the image above where the cow is splashing out of water), the 0s and 1s can be randomly placed over the body of the cow, but as we come up the neck and over the head of the cow, they can start to be ordered such that the cow's head and horns is all 1s, while the background sky is all 0s. Ofcourse, this is all over the stars of the constellation.

But I am just thinking that this may be a little too complicated for a modern-style logo (where minimalism and abstract-ness is important).

What do you think?

hi all,

I've added a nice skin to gnu-astro-logo.svg with Sagittarius, Libra, Taurus, Scorpio and Ursa Major constellations. The constellations are placed in a way to remind a circuit board! So, here we've a mix of astronomy and technology, as it should be!

I want to point out, in this particular design, that it didn't look nice to add a graphic design outside of the main logo. However, we also have to think that the logo could be very small [16x16px]. So, I support the use of both logos and their installation where appropriate.

the link is here: https://salsa.debian.org/lids-guest/debian-astro-graphic-design/blob/master/gnu-astro/gnu-astro-const-logo.svg

please quote your impressions,

Dear All,

it is nice to meet you here, this community is much important than we think!

Ι started yesterday a logo-creation for GNUastro and it seems that it's almost complete. Mohammad, helped me to direct me to a contemporary and more fresh artwork. I think that we've succeded at the moment.

I'll try to combine a touch of astronomy and tech as mentioned before of.. Taurus constellation [why not?] and see what will happen. I'm working on it and I'll send back when I'm ready!

Best regards,
lids

Thank you very much Lids for the very interesting suggested logo. It is nice and modern, while also keeping the GNU head. It is a good starting point, but I think we are on the right path to converging on a good logo.

My suggestion is that (as we discussed initially), it is a little too similar to the GNU Guix logo, and doesn't have any particular relation with astronomy. In the case of GNU Guix (a package manager), it creates a very relation with what it does: it is like a rope that is used to package things.

One element that might help in the connection with astronomy is the Taurus constellation. It is also the head of a cow! Maybe if some graphic design could be made with this it would both be clear that we are GNU and that we do astronomy. It would also be cool if we could add something to do with computers in it (like a digitized constellation of Taurus!).

What do you think?

Currently Gnuastro doesn't have any logo, but it would be good if we can have a unique logo to help in visual identification.

Lids has kindly offered to help in this aspect and has already created a suggestion which you can see here:

https://salsa.debian.org/lids-guest/debian-astro-graphic-design/blob/master/gnu-astro/gnu-astro-logo.svg

Please share your thoughts and suggestions...

After we converge on a logo here, we can share it with the general info-gnuastro mailing list (with many more Gnuastro users) and get some final thoughts before officially starting to use it.
