For what is worth, I suggest not waiting for my subtitles to upload the video, as I'm still working but the progress is not as fast as I'd like - 1 of 3 hours done. But I'm still working on it.

Your translation is great.  I only noticed a mistake at the very beginning of Stallman's talk: "it could be fixED".

Thank you again for your work!

It is much better. Thank you!

I'm uploading transcription of the first 20 minutes for your appreciation. Feedback is very welcome, mainly in the Portuguese part, where I had to translate to English what was said in Portuguese.

I eventually did it by myself.  It took me quite a while to find working commands.  For the record, with avconv version 9.20-6 ("libav-tools" in Trisquel 7's repository), here is how to downmix to mono (and add a title):
$ avconv -i rms_en.webm -ac 1 -c:v copy -metadata title='A Free Digital Society' rms_mono_en.webm
$ avconv -i rms_br.webm -ac 1 -c:v copy -metadata title='Uma Sociedade Digital Livre' rms_mono_br.webm

Having mono saves about 135 MB for each video.  I replaced the stereo versions with the mono versions on dcc.ufmg.br:

I made as well http://dcc.ufmg.br/~lcerf/rms.webm a video with both audio tracks (it does not look like Firefox lets you a choice of language but regular video players do):
$ avconv -i rms_mono_en.webm -itsoffset 00:00:02.88 -i rms_mono_br.webm -c copy -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 1:a -metadata:s:a:0 language=English -metadata:s:a:1 language='Português do Brasil' -metadata title='A Free Digital Society / Uma Sociedade Digital Livre' rms.webm

Happy transcripting and publishing!

The sound in the Portuguese version looks OK (except that the English translation during the introduction should not be present and neither should the English track at the beginning of RMS' talk; 11' onwards everything looks OK).

In the English version, there is sound in the right speaker but at a much lower volume than in the left one.  It should have been mono.  I will write to the employee who made the video and see if he accepts to redo the English version.

Thank you in advance for the subtitles!

Ok, I'll working on that and should be providing a preliminary version in some days.

However it seems that both videos have no audio in the right side speaker - only the left side works. With any other video/audio, my headset works just fine. Can you please verify that?

There exists no transcription of this talk.  You are more than welcome to do this significant work!  RMS is the sole author of what he says (hence the copyright holder) and he is all in favor of having his talks transcripted:

"If you can make a transcript of my speech after I give it, that would be quite useful." (excerpt of his "info packet")

Did they provide English subtitles for the English version?  Case not, I wonder if it would be acceptable for us (GNU) to create it and publish such subtitles in audio-video.gnu.org, in order to improve accessibility and localization (l10n) to this video. I'm translator for gnu.org (not from audio-video team), I'd be interested in working on it, if no one opposes.

Someone working for the "communication center" of the UFMG took care of creating the two WebM videos:

So, the work that remains to be done only is to publish those two videos on audio-video.gnu.org

Thank you in advance.

I have just realized that I had not given any contact info!  Here is my email address: -email is unavailable-

I should have had these three pieces of information too:

  • I cannot properly do the transcoding by myself: I only know how to use Transmageddon but it crashes, probably because of the size of the video;
  • The video, once published on audio-video.gnu.org, will be embedded in https://www.ufmg.br/90anos/ciclo-de-conferencias/
  • RMS asked a journalist (of O Tempo, a Brazilian daily newspaper), who had not properly prepared her interview, to watch the video of the talk and come back to him.  As a consequence, it would be nice if the work is promptly achieved.

Also: thank you (whoever you are!) for your work!  audio-video.gnu.org is great!

Last Monday, May 29th at 2pm, Richard Stallman gave his "A Free Digital Society: What Makes Digital Inclusion Good or Bad?" (in Portuguese: "Uma Sociedade Digital Livre: o que Torna a Inclusão Digital Boa ou Ruim?") talk in the "Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais" in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.  The audience was large: the 640-seat auditorium was packed.

The talk was video-recorded in a terrible format: Microsoft Windows Media 9 (video) and WMA Version 8 (audio) in an ASF container.  Besides, the aspect ratio differs from a camera to another (there were three cameras).  If one single ratio is to be chosen (editing the video to switch between 4:3 and 16:9 is a hassle), I believe it should be 4:3, the ratio of the camera showing RMS.  The beginning of the video should be cropped: the rector of the university introduces RMS at 11'45, RMS states his exigences (on pictures, distribution of recordings, etc.) at 17'00 and the actual talk starts at 21'27.  I let you choose the beginning you want.  If you want to separate the Q&A session, it starts at 2:27'50 (after the auction that starts at 2:20'04).

A simultaneous translation of the talk to Portuguese was separately recorded in MP3.  As far as I know audio-video.gnu.org does not host any video with a Portuguese audio track.  Having such a video would be great in my opinion (rather than only an audio recording with the slides missing).  That would mean substituting the English track of the video and synchronizing the Portuguese audio to produce a second video.

First of all I need to send you the files.  The video weights 7.6 GB.  Should I use a service such as https://framadrop.org or do want me to use FTP(S) or SFTP (I guess you run such a server)?
